Objectives
To gain an understanding of the scientific basis and practical aspects
of acute pain management in children, students should be able
to:
- Describe the pharmacology of drugs commonly used in acute
pain management in children
- Outline the advantages and disadvantages of epidural
analgesia in children
- Outline the advantages and disadvantages of intravenous
opioid infusions in children
These objectives should be achieved by briefly describing a case of a
patient requiring an opioid infusion for postoperatively and
a case of a patient requiring an epidural infusion for postoperative
analgesia. Discussion should address the above objectives in the
context of the cases described.
