Behaviour 1: The crying baby

Objectives

The student will study:

  1. What's normal (have data on range of hours/day at different ages)
  2. Indicators of a possible medical cause eg. vomiting, poor feeding, failure to thrive
  3. Soothing strategies
  4. Role of medication (none)
  5. Community supports eg. MCHN, settling centres, GP, paediatrician

Resources and learning opportunities

The student's report will include reference to (de-identified) children seen in the following clinical situations:

  1. Infant Distress clinic at CCCH, 6th floor, SE Building, Thursday 1.30pm. Contact Dr Harriet Hiscock or co-ordinators Wendy and Renee extension: 5466
  2. Visit to community settling centre such as Tweddle
  3. Spend time with MCH Nurse in the community
  4. Spend time with MCH Nurse at RCH, Michelle Meehan pager: 6163
  5. Contact Dr Campbell Paul/Brigid Jordan re: psychodynamic approach to the crying baby
  6. Interactive CD-ROM "Child Growth and Development" from Department of Paediatrics
