Objectives

At the end of this elective, students should be able to describe and discuss:

1. Similarities and differences between managing type 1 diabetes in childhood vs. adulthood
2. Implications of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial for management of diabetes during childhood
3. Screening for diabetes-related complications during childhood
4. "Sick-day management" - managing diabetes during intercurrent illness
5. Age and developmentally specific issues in diabetes management for toddlers, school-age and adolescent patients
