Disability 3: Ongoing care of children with developmental disabilities

Objectives

By the end of this elective, the student should:

  1. Know the most common causes of disability in childhood
  2. Have gained an understanding of the specific medical issues that may be encountered at various ages, eg. preschool, adolescence
  3. Have obtained knowledge of the range of services that may be required at different times
  4. Have developed an understanding of the issues for families as children grow and develop across the childhood and adolescent years

Resources and learning opportunities

  • A reading list will be provided
  • Videotape is available
  • Attendance at clinics, multidisciplinary assessments
  • Ward rounds
  • Student will observe the Clinical Nurse Consultant in Developmental Disabilities
