Objectives

1. Appreciate the impact of chronic illness on the child's view of themselves and their place in the world
2. Examine the concepts of resilience and vulnerability in relation to chronic illness
3. Develop skills in relating to chronically ill children and their families
4. Understand how and when to make a mental health referral for a child and/or family

Resources and learning opportunities

1. Spend approximately two hours in RCH Mental Health service
2. Observation of mental health assessment and treatment sessions with children with chronic illness and their families
3. Attendance at relevant ward psychosocial meetings
4. Access to relevant literature, case presentations and professional development sessions
