The Royal Children's Hospital is a specialist paediatric hospital and provides a full range of clinical services, tertiary care and health promotion and prevention programs for children and adolescents. The hospital treats approximately 32,000 in-patients and 220,000 children outpatients each year. As the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria, The Royal Children's Hospital provides clinical, academic and advocacy services for children and young people throughout the state. Patients are also referred to the hospital from other states in Australia as well as overseas.

The Royal Children's Hospital is internationally recognised as a leading centre for research and education. In its role as a leading paediatric teaching centre, the hospital has a close affiliation with the University of Melbourne. The relationship between the university and the hospital spans more than 100 years. Academic staff of the university have played a crucial role in the hospital’s development as a major tertiary care institution with an enviable international reputation for its clinical care, research and teaching. Having access to the clinical facilities at the Royal Children’s Hospital has allowed the university to provide the highest quality education in paediatrics for its medical, postgraduate nursing, psychology, social work and physiotherapy students.
