Program information

Medical students from universities other than the University of Melbourne may apply to complete an elective of up to 4 weeks duration. Elective placements are hosted by the Department of Paediatrics and are in an area of clinical interest to the student. Students must have completed the paediatric component of their medical degree.

  • The overall total duration of electives performed at the University of Melbourne must not exceed 4 weeks
  • Visiting elective students are not enrolled students of the University of Melbourne and are not covered by the University of Melbourne's insurance
  • Electives are offered subject to any necessary visas being granted
  • Students need to arrange their own accommodation
  • We are not able to offer students any remuneration or employment

International students should contact their nearest Australian Diplomatic Post to confirm details of visa requirements and permissible length of stay.

How to apply

It is recommended that you apply a minimum of 12 months in advance of your proposed elective period. Check that you have the correct dates as sometimes they cannot be changed.

To apply for an elective placement, complete the application form below and return with the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A letter of reference from your medical school, stating that you are a medical student and that you will be in your final year at the time of the elective
  • A document of evidence of cover for Public Liability, Professional Indemnity/Medical and Health Malpractice and Personal Accident Insurance from your medical school. This must be an original document printed on the school letterhead

Successful applicants should be notified within 30 days of their application being received. It may be that disciplines selected have already been allocated to other students, in which case you should indicate if you would be willing to be placed in another available department.
