Royal Children's Hospital elective students

All 2010 placements are full. We are currently accepting applications for 2011 and 2012

Program information

Medical students from universities other than the University of Melbourne may apply to complete an elective of up to 4 weeks duration. Elective placements are hosted by the Department of Paediatrics and are in an area of clinical interest to the student. Students must have completed the paediatric component of their medical degree.

Students coming to RCH for greater than 4 weeks are usually undertaking research projects and must apply throught the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute as well as relevent RCH clinical department. Students  are required to complete the following:

  1. Visitor Form
  2. Personal Details
  3. Confidentiality Agreement

Local Students need to provide a copy of their CV and also require a Police Check and Working With Children clearance.

For the International students we require a copy of their Passport and Visa. Contact person: Colleen King

  • The overall total duration of electives performed at the University of Melbourne must not exceed 4 weeks
  • Visiting elective students are not enrolled students of the University of Melbourne and are not covered by the University of Melbourne's insurance
  • Electives are offered subject to any necessary visas being granted
  • We are not able to offer students any remuneration or employment
  • Students need to arrange their own accommodation

International students should contact their nearest Australian Diplomatic Post to confirm details of visa requirements and permissible length of stay.

Fees

For students planning to do an elective placement in 2009, an administration fee of AUD $800.00 (non refundable) is payable by bank cheque (made payable to the Department of Paediatrics) or credit card. This fee must be paid prior to the start of your elective.

How to apply

It is recommended that you apply a minimum of 12 months in advance of your proposed elective period. Check that you have the correct dates as often they cannot be changed.

Fill in the Elective Application Form and email it to rch.elective@rch.org.au

Step 2
Successful applicants will be notified within 30 days of their application being received and we will forward a letter of offer to you.  

Please note: your preferred discipline can not be confirmed at this time.

If you accept the offer, you will need to provide the following documents:

  • A police check or working with children check, or both
  • A document of evidence of cover for Public Liability, Professional Indemnity/Medical and Health Malpractice and Personal Accident Insurance from your medical school.
  • A letter of reference from your medical school, stating that you are a medical student and that you will be in your final year at the time of the elective
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • You will need to organise payment of the $800 administration fee, via bank cheque or credit card. Please note: you will not be able to start your elective placement until payment has been processed.

Step 3

When all documentation has been received we will send you a letter of acceptance, which will indicate the discipline, from your preferences, that you have been allocated to. This letter will provide information on what you will need to do on the day of your arrival.
